The Holy Struggle
There’s a story in Genesis that has always intrigued me. In Genesis 32:24-28, Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, wrestles with an Angel all night long. This epic match ends with a blessing that forever changes the people of God.
We see a similar scene re-enacted day-after-day at the Rio Bravo Project. The kids grapple with each other for hours then each session ends with God’s messenger giving them a blessing. Steve’s purposeful presence is what sets apart RBP from most other Jiu-Jitsu facilities. The participants are not just learning to defend themselves in a fight, they are being taught invaluable spiritual lessons from their experiences. Rio Bravo is indeed a holy place – a place set apart so that God’s will can be revealed to these children, and their lives can be changed forever.
In the biblical story, the Angel blesses Jacob by changing his name. Consider that for a moment. God knew that Jacob’s descendants would take on this name as well. He could have chosen any other word that would aptly describe His people. Perhaps it might have been appropriate to bestow on Jacob the Hebrew word for “follower” or “believer” or “disciple”. But instead, the Angel said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with man and have overcome.” In Hebrew, “Israel” means “struggles with God” and thus, God’s people would take on the name that means Strugglers, Grapplers, and Wrestlers! Perhaps there is no better symbology to represent those whose faith is in God, because that is what we do day-after-day.
Life is a struggle, and it is especially difficult for the children who train at the Rio Bravo Project. Sure, they learn grappling skills to defend themselves, but these sessions are monitored under controlled conditions. Not just under the rules of Jiu Jitsu, but also under the spiritual oversight of God’s messenger, Steve Jolly, whom you yourselves have sent. We are grateful for your willingness to support us in this holy struggle!
